We have just finished wrapping up our third summer camp for the orphanage we support from Fukushima. The goal as always is to give the kids a memorable summer camp across the traditional Japanese Obon holiday period when all their friends are away with their families. The kids, 32 in total range in age from 5 to 18 years old and it was nice to see them again as they start to feel more comfortable and get to know the new volunteers as well as reacquainting themselves with our regulars, Miyashita San, Baba San and Tomoda San.
From Zip lining at Madarao to BBQ and Kayaking down at Lake Nojiriko it was a really fun and rewarding 4 days, though probably most tiring for the teachers. As volunteers we get to share the fun activities with the kids and for me personally it is something I look forward to all year. Each year we try to change the camp to keep it exciting. Next year we are thinking the monster Zip line at Arai!
When you book a holiday with Powder Recon please know a proportion of your hard earned money goes towards these camps and supporting these kids who in most instances will grow up in the orphanage. This is the only time they get a ‘holiday’ and actually spend time away from the orphanage.
And with the above in mind we are excited to do what we do best, a winter camp for the kids this March/April. So that we can introduce them to skiing, snowboarding and for the less adventurously inclined tobogganing.
