The Northern Odyssey Tour revolves around the incredible terrain that Northern Honshu has to offer. We have curated a trip that incorporates the best spots in the Iwate and Aomori regions, with our destination being decided daily based on the snow and the weather conditions.

This tour is all about getting out of the resort and exploring the incredible terrain that Northern Honshu has to offer. Even with the emphasis on exploring outside of the resort, this doesn't mean you have to be putting skins on everyday of your tour --- with the ability to ski tour, it enhances your opportunity to make the most out of the storms, which means you can still get fresh lines even days after the last snowfall.

What to expect on the Northern Odyssey Tour?

We will use lift lines to gain access into various backcountry spots. There are also a number of different spots to ski tour straight from the van if the group wishes.
Based on the ability of the group, the average uphill climb when touring will be between 300 - 600 vertical meters with the opportunity to push further if the group desires.
You can expect a minimum of two touring opportunities a week, with the option for more if the group desires.
Keen to ski tour everyday? Then we will! Your week goes how you want it to. With two guides and a max of 10 clients, the group is split up based on what everyone's objectives are.
The idea of this tour is to have flexibility so that when the resorts are powder-packed, we can hit this first before exploring un-tracked lines further beyond the resorts.

Ability level and requirements

Avalanche safety equipment - shovel, probe & transceivers are a MUST. If you do not have your own avalanche safety gear, we have packs available to rent!
Ski touring/splitboarding equipment is required. Don't have your own? Don't worry, we have ski touring set ups available for rent!
Whether it is your first time putting on skins, or you're a seasoned up-hill traveler, this tour caters for all. * Your guides will split the group up based on ability.
A good level of fitness is required to ensure you get the most out of your tour.
Skiers must be confident in skiing deep powder, tight trees and a mix of different terrain. Snowboarders must be comfortable to keep speed on flats and feel confident on traverses.
You MUST have a sense of adventure and an eagerness to explore beyond the boundaries!

Itinerary

Arrival — Saturday
Your tour begins at a hotel conveniently located right next to Morioka JR Station. The group will meet in the hotel lobby at 5:30pm, before heading out for our welcome dinner together.

Saturday Night — Morioka
We’ll meet in Morioka and settle into our first hotel of the tour. This is our chance to get acquainted with the group before the adventure begins.

Sunday Night – Thursday Morning — Iwate
On Sunday, we’ll move on to our next destination: a true ski-in, ski-out ryokan nestled in the mountains.

From here, we’ll explore all that the Iwate region has to offer, combining incredible snow and terrain with the traditional Japanese hospitality and culture that makes Tohoku so special.

Thursday Night – Saturday Morning — Aomori
On Thursday, we’ll continue north towards Aomori, one of the snowiest cities in the world.

Our final stay will be at another traditional ryokan, where we’ll experience the cultural delights of the Aomori region alongside some truly incredible snow and terrain.

Saturday — Departure
Sadly, it’s time to say our goodbyes. On Saturday morning, your guides will drop you at a local train station, where you can connect to Shin-Aomori Station.

From Shin-Aomori, you can catch a direct train to Tokyo Station, making your onward journey simple and straightforward.

The Tour accessed local ski-fields around Morioka followed by the terrific Resort at Aomori-Springs. The skiing was excellent; the ski-guiding was first-class with safety at top of mind; the accommodation was terrific with Onsens and great food.
