Imagine a place of deep, dry powder snow; of thick forests of birch, beech, elm and cedar. A place rich in Japanese culture, history and heritage; surrounded by unequalled pristine natural beauty. Imagine all this blanketed by up to 13 metres of snowfall annually…….welcome to Myoko.
Myoko occupies a corner of Niigata Prefecture on the border of the neighbouring Nagano Prefecture in the heart of Honshu, just over 2 hours by train from Tokyo. This ski resort area is unique being built and developed around the natural environment and, steeped in tradition - one of the oldest established ski areas in the world (founded in the 1930’s) - and to this day retains its small town feeling and charm.
Dominating the landscape is the majestic Mt Myoko (2,454m), a volcanic cone surrounded by the distinctive smooth slopes of the caldera from which it emerged. This is where we ride, enjoying in the breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains in all directions and the sparkling Lake Nojiri below. Mt Myoko delivers not only a huge diversity of ski resorts but also unlimited backcountry opportunities.
Skiing and snowboarding is the main attraction of the area with some of the best, longest and deepest powder runs in Japan. From our base in Akakura Onsen you have the luxury of choice - fantastic tree riding in Myoko Akakura, the long wide pistes of Myoko Suginohara, world class park facilities at Myoko Ikenotaira, unlimited off-piste riding at Seki Onsen and a mix of all the above at the dual resort of Madarao-Tangram, not to mention the endless possibility of guided back-country riding for the more adventurous.
The opportunities are endless and will suit both the beginner and expert alike. The diversity of the area ensures you get the most out of your time on the snow.
After riding or if having a day off, experience the cultural and natural beauty of the area by walking along snow walled streets in the traditional Akakura Onsen village, visiting local izakayas (small Japanese bars) or discovering one of the many aesthetically beautiful onsens that Myoko is famous for.
