Powder Recon has recorded a base in the Myoko Kogen area that is 3m deep (10ft).

The heart of Japan has lived up to it's reputation as having some of the highest snowfalls around. 50-60cm hasn't been uncommon overnight the past few weeks. Powder days galore!

The Powder Recon Japan team has been exploiting some of the best terrain accessed off multiple resort areas for their guests. Trees, steeper drops, bowls, small or large hikes, groomers, mellow powder runs, neck-deep powder, parks or whatever you are looking for...it is all there for you too. Just drop us an inquiry and we will set something up in your budget for you ASAP!

This year we will be finding the "best" snow on offer in the Myoko area and at places "somewhere" in Japan...

Seriously, Japan is really starting to open up to the foreign ski market, so we want to stick to our roots and keep it fresh, neck-deep, with no crowds and a traditional feel. So keep in touch with us to explore Japan with local knowledge.

As usual we are based in Myoko for the season. With the freeze level now well below the town, we expect the snow base to build rapidly, keeping its light fluffy top from new fresh falls almost daily. Remember, Myoko has some of the highest snowfalls in Japan and is know for some of the best pillow and tree lines!

Below, check out the early falls dusting the streets of Myoko Kogen, Japan. Oh yeah, in the first image thats a good izakaya (居酒屋) on the corner there...check it out.

After a great start to the Australian ski season, with good snowfalls in June and July, it has
been a story of warm weather and rain ever since. Despite this, the
Powder Recon team has been busy working towards the next Japanese
season with some days in the Aussie mountains.

Bryce, Dave and James just arrived back from a weekend's avalanche
training in Perisher, NSW. Saturday
was spent in the
classroom, while Sunday was all about beacon shovel and probe practice
(with a few opportunities to ride some lines as well). Conditions for
the
course were very warm, and as the base melts away our attention is now
turning towards the Northern Hemisphere winter.

The skills will come in handy when seeking out
fresh lines in the heart of Japan this coming season. While the warm and sunny
weather was nice we could not help think of the Myoko Powder.

Everyone
wants something different out of a ski holiday, and that's why we are
always looking to add new and varied options for your stay. We still
offer
our old favourites like Seventh Door and Korakuso, but we are also
proud to add a few classic ryokan choices for next season.

Gen Ryokan:
A real Japanese experience, Gen is a luxury ryokan located in a quiet
snow-filled birch forest. It is in a secluded location approximately
5 minutes walk from the lifts at the Ikenotaira ski area, and is a real
step up in quality from the other hotels in the area. The rooms are
very stylish, and many of them offer private balcony onsens. What could
be better than soaking in your very own onsen
after a tough day on the slopes? Gen also has a high class restaurant
offering traditional multi course Japanese food.

As
it is located some distance from the Akakura village, Gen is the
perfect option for those after a private getaway with a taste of
traditional Japanese
luxury. For more information or photos, click through to our Gen

Okayama Ryokan:
Okayama is a traditional Japanese option, and has been owned and run by
the Okayama family for over 50 years. The rooms are traditional
and spacious, and this is a very popular option with Japanese guests
visiting the area. The hotel also serves some of the best Japanese food
in Myoko, with wonderful meals prepared by the in-house chef.

The
rooms do not offer ensuite facilities and showering is the onsen, as is
typical for traditional Japanese guesthouses. We love Okayama, and
think it
will suit people who want to have the full cultural experience. The
owners are incredibly friendly, and always make the effort to welcome
you after a day of skiing. All the photos and details are on our

People are always surprised to hear that there are so many great options
within a short driving distance of Myoko. The reason you often don't
hear about them is that private transport is the only way to get there,
and we are the only operator in town running guided trips with our own
vehicles. We already choose from Akakura, Suginohara, Seki Onsen,
Ikenotaira and Madarao-Tangram depending on conditions, but we have now
added two more choices.

Togakushi: The first of these is Togakushi, a medium sized resort
around 40 minutes drive from Myoko. If you thought Madarao-Tangram was
uncrowded, wait till you check this out. There are some surprisingly
challenging runs, some great off-piste and in tree options, as well as
an awesome park. Chances are you will be riding untracked pow all day
when we head to Togakushi. Click on this link to our webpage for all the
details. You can find photos, more information and a trail map.

Ryuo Ski Park is the other new addition, and this is a place with
a real backcountry feel. When it snows this is the place to be: awesome
open trees and plenty of steeper terrain, this is now one of our
favourite resorts. It's a little further away than Togakushi, but when
the snow is on it is definitely worth the drive. More details are on our
    web page here.

As
you know, the Bandai region in Fukushima is one of our favourite
destinations. Unfortunately the earthquake and its aftermath mean that
there is uncertainty
regarding the safety of visiting this area. For this reason our plans
to tour Fukushima in season 2012 are currently on hold. We remain
dedicated to visiting the area in the future, and will be heading there
in September to reassess. Powder Recon will continue volunteering in the worst affected area when the majority of ground staff arrive in later in the year.

The best source of travel
advice is the governments Smart Traveller website -

www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/japan

The good
news is that Myoko and the majority of other areas in Japan remain safe
to visit, and the situation in these areas has largely returned to
normal.
