Powder Recon Japan - Season Recap

Well it certainly was an amazing season in Myoko Kogen this year with many epic days to talk about - lots of powder, blue bird days and smiles - especially on days where you wake up to the Powder Recon van looking like this:

Touring Fukushima

Apologies for the lack of blogging recently. We have been travelling further north in Fukushima prefecture over the past week in the Mt Bandai region.

Perfect conditions with light, dry powder and bluebird to make for an amazing week. The lack of crowds at Alts, Nekoma and Gran Deco meant that the Powder Recon tour crew pretty much had private resorts to themselves with endless freshies to be had daily. Top to bottom runs with not a lift queue to be seen. Perfect!

Back in Myoko now and we were greeted today with 60cm of fresh which followed a relatively modest 20cm of fresh the night before. The snow is falling had and conditions remain epic.

Hit the Champion Course first thing this morning alongside ski patrol. Waist deep powder all the way down. there is nothing else likel it.

If you are on your way over, might pay to bring a snorkel as the epic conditions are set to continue over the next week.

Lots of grins on faces at the moment.

January 26th.....

Australia Day was welcomed in Myoko by 40cm of fresh. And what better way to start than first tracks down Champion course (Akakura Kanko resort) with ski patrol. I'm not sure who was more excited, us or them. The rest of the day was spent in the Akakura trees and back country with the only competition a handful of locals.

January 27th....

With a perfect bluebird day on the horizon the choice was obvious....Madarao/Tangram. The Tangram side is rarely busy on a week day and after the previous days snow a few hidden spots ensured that we had fresh lines all day at Tangram in the morning and then on to Madarao where ski patrol are more forgiving to those who ride the trees.

The snow has been on and off lately but conditions remain very good. When it isn't powder, it has been sunny and clear with amazing visability. The forecast is for more snow over the coming weeks so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Midweek the crowds are down and we have been getting un-interupted top to bottom runs on empty pistes while we wait for the new snow. The legs are getting a real workout at the moment with no rest for the wicked! It's all good.

It's POWDER everywhere you look in Japan at the moment and Myoko Kogen and the surrounding areas are copping a fair bit of it. Lots of snow over the last two days has fallen in Akakura Onsen.

Powder Recon's home resort, Akakura Kanko (Akakan) has reached a base of 3 metres and Seki Onsen nearby (and visited by us - if the roads are clear enough) has a massive base of 4.5m which is the equal second of the resort with the most snowfall in Japan at the moment. In fact the top 3 resorts in Japan with the most snowfall are all currently in Niigata (and who said Hokkaido-Niseko gets all the snow!!).

if you are heading over soon and you still have the long, straight skinny skis - here's a tip - it's time to upgrade to the fats!!

A perfect start to 2010

An amazing start to the season here in Myoko Kogen. Since new year the area has reportedly received in excess of a metre of fresh snow fall with an average of about 20cm falling per day.

The snow base is currently sitting at around 220cm-250cm which means that any new snow is powder on the surface - perfect for the 'face shots'...

The Powder Recon clients and crew have been ripping it up on the slopes in and around Akakura Onsen and all reports are of big smiles after epic days. The onsens are getting a workout as well keeping the bodies nice and relaxed for the currently continuous days of powder bliss!

Happy New Year from the team at Powder Recon!

Well as predicted a huge storm hit the area prior to the new year and the result was the biggest overnight snowfall in Myoko Kogen in at least two years with somewhere around a meter of snow falling and accumulating on the ground.

Reports are that the snow continues to fall and the quality is light powder. The reported snow base is just under 2 metres but this will climb fairly quickly.

Time to get out and wax up those super fat skis or powder boards if you are preparing to head over.

Myoko Kogen - Open For Business....

Welcome to season 2010 - the resorts in Myoko Kogen are officially open and what better way to kick off the season than with some some epic snowfall!!

Over the past week the clouds have rolled in and the temperature has dropped dramatically and as a result, the snow is falling - hard!! Myoko Kogen has been copping a pounding of powder. In Akakura Kanko (Powder Recon's home resort) in two consecutive days, the resort has received over a metre of fresh including an epic 85cm fall yesterday.

The website www.snowjapan.com is reporting a base of 120cm with further snow predicted to fall over the next two days as well. The quality of the powder is light and dry and is bound to get deeper.

January 2010 is shaping up to be an awesome first month of the season, so if you aren't already locked into a trip, get on board as our accommodation is booking out quickly.

At the beginning of this month, a cold snap hit Myoko Kogen and a nice little dump of 35cm of fresh pow hit the village - bingo!
